On December 14, 2023, the European Council made an historic decision to open membership negotiations with Ukraine. What preceded it was a long, arduous, and often uneven effort of Ukraine’s people and its government to chart the country’s path toward Euro-Atlantic integration, a path that Russia refused to accept. Indeed, Ukraine’s European choice is at the crux of Russia’s war against Ukraine and has been both galvanized and complicated by it. The road ahead toward Ukraine’s full membership in the European Union is likely equally long and arduous.

Global Europe Program is delighted for the opportunity to discuss the path Ukraine covered on the road to EU, as well as what lies ahead, with Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze, a Ukrainian politician and civil society leader who made an extraordinary contribution toward Ukraine’s European integration.
