When the Kremlin launched its full-scale war against Ukraine, it did so in the belief that the West lacked the strategic purpose, steadfastness and moral fibre to enable Ukraine to prosecute it to its conclusion.
Last year’s Global Risks Report warned of a world that would not easily rebound from continued shocks. As 2024 begins, the 19th edition of the report is set against a backdrop of rapidly accelerating technological change and economic uncertainty, as the world is plagued by a duo of dangerous crises: climate and conflict.
Appeasing dictators won’t work – Republicans need to fight back against this administration’s failing policies vis-à-vis Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, Cuba, and Venezuela. Russia’s war of aggression – the largest land invasion in Europe since the Second World War – is eerily reminiscent of Poland of 1939.
The year draws to a close with yet another bitter reminder of how the international community could have done more to assist Ukraine against Russia, but chose not to. Threats to shipping in the Red Sea have triggered a strong and immediate international military response to protect commerce there.
Russia’s renewed campaign of missile and drone strikes against Ukrainian civilians has begun in earnest. The campaign was long expected — but even so, Ukraine’s Western backers appear to be repeating the same mistakes of last year in responding to it.
